As a reader though, we get the impression that life almost happens to him. Pudge is the main character of the book by virtue of the fact that he brings us with him to the world of Culver Creek. ‘Looking for Alaska’ follows Miles Halter as he leaves his lonely, self-contained life with his parents behind and integrates into the fully functioning society within the walls of Culver Creek boarding school where he becomes known as ‘Pudge’ (ironically, given his slight build). Nor could it be said that it is an easy read.ĭespite its title, the book is not set in Alaska. But if ‘Looking for Alaska’ is young adult fiction, there is no sacrifice in terms of quality as a result of the book’s genre or target audience. Sometimes I hear of adult readers returning to young adult fiction looking for nostalgia and the comfort of an easy read - similar to the experience of browsing Netflix endlessly only to return where we knew we would end up, watching the shows that got us through our teens and young adulthood. ![]() ![]() “Looking for Alaska” by John Green - Young adult fiction, but don’t let that put you off ![]()

Or am I supposed to be moved to wonder by the unfathomable alienness of other species, because in learning less than I wanted to know about ribbon eels and more than I wanted to know about the author's early months with her infant, all the differences between those phenomena are called to mind? Am I supposed to be charmed into such ecstasies by the sheer whimsy of it all that my rational brain shuts down? I think what it comes down to is that neither her personal experiences nor the natural phenomena were explored with anywhere near enough detail to immerse me. ![]() Moving to a new school made the author want to be like a vampire squid because she too wanted to hide? Flamingos have long legs, like the author's, and she spent nights out dancing in college on those long legs, and currently worries for the safety of young girls? I don't understand the point of juxtaposing such disparate subjects. The associations are bizarre and contrived. ![]() Each essay is named after a natural phenomenon (plant, animal, typhoon) and makes a facile connection from that to a time in the author's life. An ambitious and lovely project, to interweave personal essay and nature writing, but too clumsily done for me to enjoy. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Percy jackson books set hardcover![]() ![]() He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades’s realm. Then there is Stephen, their 18-year-old boarder/servant who dotes on Cassandra so much that her father calls him her ‘swain.’Ĭassandra keeps a diary and has a literary bent, which is partly why I liked this novel as much as I did. The young woman is 17-year-old Cassandra, the narrator of the story, and she describes her unusual poverty-stricken family beautifully. Once I’d started this book my hesitancy quickly disappeared as I discovered that it is such a quirky, fun with patches of seriousness, fairytale-ish story, that captures all the angst of a young woman in love with someone who loves someone else.
